CONSTRUCTION and road upgrading will be carried out in various areas over the next few weeks.
In New Canada, Canada Road will remain closed from Buffalo Street until Rietbok Street due to construction. A temporary route which passes through Pennyville has been created. Construction in the area is expected to continue until the end of June 2011.
All lanes will be open from Highgate in Industria up until the bridge crossing the railway on Commando Road. After the bridge the two lanes to the north crossing the railway going towards the Maraisburg Road intersection will be open. One lane is open to the south from Commando Road and Blumberg Street due to the tarmac being upgraded for the Rea Vaya station that will be built.
Traffic lights at the intersection of Commando Road and Marais Road are not operational and drivers should expect to be delayed during peak times.
Traveling north on Commando Road, there are two lanes open until the Commando Road and Price Street intersection opposite the Shell garage. One lane is open in both directions as there is construction taking place at Riaad Moosa hospital intersection. Construction on this section is expected to be finished by the 3rd of April 2011.
In Auckland Park, the traffic deviation split on Kingsway road between the Engen garage has been moved further down Empire road to accommodate construction. One lane is open on Empire road after the deviation, two lanes open after the Antique shop on Empire Road and thereafter three lanes are operational after passing Lancet heading towards the city.
One lane from the city is open on Empire Road from the Barry Hertzorg intersection to the Menton and Stanley intersection which leads traffic to the left on Menton Street to join Annet Road opposite the University of Johannesburg Bunton campus. This road goes past SABC on Kingsway Road.
There are two open permanent lanes opposite the Toyota dealership in Milpark, the other two lanes will be used by Rea Vaya for stations being built. Heading towards the city there are three lanes open and one lane on ramp to the M1 south.
In respect of Parktown, there is one lane open at the Jan Smuts and Empire intersection due to the widening of the roads. There are two lanes open again after you pass the BP Garage at Joubert Street and Empire Road intersection. Motorist shouldn’t be alarmed by the yellow jersey barriers along the road; they are meant to demarcate a walking pavement for pedestrians. Construction is expected to be finished by the end of July 2011.
In respect of the inner city, there is one lane open from Harrison Street and Jeppe Street to President Street. Two lanes are open along Rissik Street between Fox and Wolmarans Street opposite Park station. Motorists are encouraged not to use the other lane on Rissik Street as a parking bay as this causes traffic congestion.
Finalisation of Phase 1A routes
Progress in Klipspruit Valley Road is currently being upgraded. One lane is open to the north at the Dube intersection on Klipspruit valley opposite Nancefield hostel. Drivers will be directed to use the trunk route until the next intersection opposite the closed down Nissan dealership and BP garage. There are no lane closures southward on Klipspruit Valley Road.
Strengthening of existing dedicated lanes
Both BRT lanes will remain closed on Pat Mbatha due to the upgrading to strengthen the lanes. A BRT station is being built on Pat Mbatha at Booysens Reserve. Motorist should expect minor delays as Rea Vaya buses will switch from BRT lanes into normal lanes on some parts of Pat Mbatha. Construction will be finished by November 2011.
Along Charlton Terrace, there are no road closures but motorists are expected to share their lanes with the Rea Vaya buses at certain points. Construction commenced on the 21st of February and is expected to be done in a period of 5 months.
