FROM February until December 2011 Rea Vaya BRT dedicated roadways will be constructed along Rissik and Harrison Streets. These dedicated roadways for Phase 1B will link Metro loop in the North with the existing BRT dedicated roadways along Market and Commissioner Street.
The construction will entail the upgrading, widening and reconstruction of the existing lanes for conversion into BRT lanes as well as the upgrading of sidewalks and public lighting. Three new Rea Vaya stations will also be built.
Unfortunately there will be some traffic disruptions but these will be kept to a minimum.
Both Harrison and Rissik streets will have two lanes open to traffic throughout the construction process. Access to cross streets and off street parking will also remain available.
Currently the contractor is busy with the relocation of services such as gas, electrical and water pipes.
The following road space will be taken from the mixed traffic lanes in February:
- On Rissik Street from the start of the bridge by Park Station to Wolmarans Street the far left lanes will be closed and will only be opened to traffic in May 2011.
- On Rissik Street, from Prichard Street to Jeppe Street the left and far left lanes will be closed and will only be opened to traffic in April 2011.
- On Harrison Street, from Jeppe to Prichard Street, the left and far left lanes will be closed and will only be opened to traffic in May2011.
In addition to the road work that is taking place on Harrison and Rissik Streets, road construction has resumed on Empire at the intersection of Joubert Street/ Sam Hancock near the Helpmekaar School, for distance covering a total length of 1.3 km. The contractor onsite is busy with station platform works, relocation of electrical services, finalising the laying of storm water pipes and earthworks.
Motorists are advised to abide by the traffic control signals that will be put in place, to find alternative routes and where possible to use public transport to move around the City.
We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused.
