The Noordgesig Extension Station will open next week, meaning passengers will no longer have to walk to Orlando Stadium or Diepkloof stations to catch a bus. PASSENGERS travelling between Soweto and the inner city on Rea Vaya can now enjoy the convenience of another station in the township. Noordgesig Extension Station, on the corner of Mooki Street and the Soweto Highway, will be up-and-running and fully functional on 17 October. “The opening of this station reduces the distance passengers now have to walk between the current stations at Orlando Stadium and Diepkloof,” says the member of the mayoral committee for transport, Rehana Moosajee. The station’s opening was delayed because a Rand Water pipe on the section of the trunk route had to be relocated, she explains. Ticket prices will remain the same from the new station, with passengers paying R7.30 for each trip to the city centre. During the week, buses travelling to the inner city will start operating from 5.05am, with the last bus departing Ellis Park at 9pm and arriving at Noordgesig at 9.30pm. Between 5.05am and 5.20am, there will be a bus every 10 minutes; from 5.20 to 8am, a bus will arrive every three minutes; between 8 and 9am, bus frequency is every five minutes; and from 9am to 3pm, there will be a bus every 10 minutes. For the trip from the Joburg city centre, bus frequencies are: from 2.15pm to 3pm, every 10 minutes; between 3 and 3.30pm, every five minutes; between 3.30 and 6pm, every three minutes; and from 6pm to 9pm, when the last bus leaves, every 15 minutes. On Saturdays, the first bus will depart Soweto at 5.30am, with the last bus leaving Ellis Park at 6pm. On the trip into the city, there will be a bus every five minutes between 5.30am and 8.30am; and every 15 minutes between 8.30am and 12noon. From Joburg to Soweto, there will be a bus every five minutes from 12noon to 3pm and every 15 minutes between 3pm and 6pm. On Sundays, the first bus will leave Noordgesig at 6.30am and the last bus will leave Ellis Park at 6.15pm. There will be a frequency of 30 minutes between each bus the whole day and in both directions. Soweto residents using the station for the first time have been urged to observe the rules of the road and cross Mooki Street at the traffic lights. Related stories |
