In line with the City's annual tariff approvals, Rea Vaya fares will be adjusted from 1 July, with the cheapest tickets rising by 50c a trip.
PROPOSED annual tariff adjustments will be approved in June this year. Tariffs are usually approved in May, but were delayed this year by the local government elections, held on 18 May.
"On an annual basis, the council approves proposed tariff increases for the municipality of Johannesburg, in consultation with the public," explained Rea Vaya’s Operations director Jeff Ngcobo.
The public consultation meeting by municipal-owned entities was held in March this year. Rea Vaya is a municipal-owned entity, and hence will introduce new prices along with all other such companies. Its new prices will come into effect on Friday, 1 July.
Commuters are advised to buy only enough tickets for trips up to 30 June. Tickets with the new prices will be on sale from the afternoon of 30 June.
Those passengers who have already bought tickets for travelling into July, however, will be able to exchange their old tickets at stations for new tickets. They will need to hand in a valid ticket, and pay the difference for a new ticket.
"The exchange of old tickets for new tickets will be valid up until 4 July 2011, after which no further exchanges will be allowed," says the company.
Trips costing R3,50 will rise by 50 cents to R4 a trip; the R6 trips will cost R7,30 and the R9,50 trips will be R10,50.
Rea Vaya buses run at regular intervals using dedicated bus lanes; this helps to combat traffic congestion and improve the quality of public transport.
Rea Vaya is also the cleanest public transport on the continent. The buses run on low-sulphur diesel and have the most advanced pollution reduction equipment. They reduce nitrous oxides, the most dangerous health risk from vehicular emissions, by thousands of tons a year and particulate matter by hundreds of tons annually.
