While road upgrades are progressing briskly, construction of stations in the Ellis Park loop, Nascrec and Soweto sections are nearing completion.
Greater Ellis Park
Saratoga Avenue
The BRT layerworks and southern widening for mixed traffic lanes are finished and the asphalt overlays for all the layers are about 80% complete. Rumble blocks have been installed for the full length of the road. Additionally, road marking and erection of signage are progressing well. Relocation of services is complete, except for a length of a water main on the sidewalk between Banket and Nugget Streets.
Bertrams Road
The earthworks for the entire length of the road are complete with the exception of the area around the BRT station opposite the Standard Bank Arena. Also complete:
- Asphalt surfacing for all the mixed traffic lanes.
- Asphalt overlay and widening of intersections (bellmouths) along the temporary BRT turning loop.
- Overlays and paving of sidewalks on a number of adjoining streets.
Paving of the southern sidewalk is approximately 90% complete and the installation of new street lighting by City Power is well underway.
Inner City
To date 20 blocks have had bitumen layers milled out and replaced with a new 40 mm wearing course. The BRT lanes’ 150mm BTB layers are also in place. Construction of the BRT lanes between Commissioner and Noord along Troye/Twist and Mooi/Claim is now substantially complete.
Stations
Construction of the stations situated on the Ellis Park loop has progressed considerably. At Bertrams and Charlton Terrace, the contractor is currently installing façade steel while the stations in Saratoga Avenue and Smith Street have reached practical completion.
In the Inner City, Joubert Park (North) and Edith Cavell have both reached practical completion. Along Market and Commissioner Streets, formwork on the columns is being erected at five stations.
The two stations on the Nasrec route are progressing well and are both at superstructure stage.
In Soweto, all stations with the exception of Regina Mundi, are at superstructure stage. |
