Rea Vaya construction is taking place along Empire Road between Jan Smuts Avenue and the intersection of Joubert and Sam Hancock streets.

Retaining in progress at Helpmekaar School
Scope of works – This section is 1.3 km long. The detailed scope of work also includes construction of the dedicated BRT bus lanes, relocation of services running along the bus lanes and the resurfacing of mixed traffic lanes, street lighting, construction of a station platform and paving of sidewalks. The one BRT stations along the route will be executed under a separate contract.
Construction progress – contractor is currently busy with:
- Relocation of electrical services and street lightning
- 110mm water pipe line relocation
- Retaining wall at Helpmekaar
- Road widening along Empire
- Layerworks at Joubert Street
- Installation of ITS sleeves
Traffic Accommodation – two lanes will open to traffic throughout construction process and no road closures are anticipated. Construction of major intersections will be undertaken over weekends. |
